Small Royal Navy ships occasionally visit Sharpness and/or pass up the canal to Gloucester on goodwill visits.
 

HMS Tracker and HMS Raider (pictured)

These two Archer class fast patrol vessels, crewed by students from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, made a goodwill visit to Gloucester in July 2006. On the way up the canal from Sharpness, the officers entertained the Mayor and Sheriff of Gloucester.

HMS Charger and HMS Biter

These two Archer class fast patrol vessels are mainly used to train university students in navigation, operation and seamanship. They passed down the canal on 15 July 2005 following a visit to Gloucester during their annual two-week summer deployment. (Photo: Mike Nash)

HMS Trumpeter and HMS Charger

These two Archer class fast patrol vessels passed Purton on 2 Aug 2004 on the way to visiting Gloucester during their annual two-week summer deployment.
